As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and pay attention to your breath. Slowly take three long, deep breaths, and remember that you are in the loving presence of God.
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Jesus makes a promise to his disciples that comes with a challenge attached. The promise is that, in his physical absence after the Resurrection, Jesus will be present in a new way. The challenge is where they will experience his presence. Jesus does not say that he will be found in solitude. Rather, Jesus will be found in the midst of believers who gather together-in the midst of those who seek out each other to build communities of faith. Disciples must count on each other to experience the presence of the risen Jesus.
When have I experienced the presence of Jesus while joining in prayer with others?
Who might I ask to pray with me at this time for a special intention?
(Speak to Jesus using the following prayer or one of your own.)
Risen Jesus, thank you for inviting me into community with other believers. May your presence be what sustains us.
