Pause for a few moments and set aside distractions as you begin your retreat. Be aware of God's loving presence as you continue your journey into the mystery of faith.
Matthew 25:40
And the king will say to them in reply, "Amen I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me."
God's mercy is shown in judgment. In this passage Jesus speaks of the final judgment as being similar to a shepherd sorting sheep from goats. In his words we discover that judgment is not based on how we have attained personal or public greatness, but on our actions toward those in need. Jesus showed us again and again by his words and actions how to reach out and be present to those who are in need. In the end, we will be judged by how much we followed the example of Jesus.
What can I do today to help care for those in need?
In whom do I need to recognize God's presence more consistently?
(Speak to God using this prayer or one of your own.)
God of mercy and judgment, thank you for your love, which continually calls me to come closer to you. Help me to see you and serve you in all those I meet, especially those in need.
