As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and allow yourself to grow still. Let go of any distracting thoughts. Take several slow, deep breaths. Become aware of the great love God has for you.
Philippians 1:9-11
And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
Saint Paul wrote this letter while in prison. In it he expresses his great love and hopeful prayer for the growing community of faith. Families are the first community of faith. In unity with the Holy Spirit they can be a fruitful source of love, peace, and justice. Our families teach us how to share, how to love, how to be fair, and how to serve others. We can join Paul's prayer as we think of the families we know. In our own family we have a wonderful opportunity to participate in the work of the Holy Spirit, to serve the Kingdom of God on earth.
How often do I spend time discerning what is of value in my life?
What valuable lessons did I learn in my family that I can pass along to others?
(Speak to God using these words or others that come to mind.)
Ever-loving God, you long for us to grow in love and wisdom and knowledge of you. Direct my feet along your path that I may be pure and blameless on the day you call me home.
