As you prepare for your retreat, pause for a moment.Take several deep breaths, and allow yourself to grow still. Be aware of God's loving presence within you.
Psalm 33:6
By the LORD's word the heavens were made; by the breath of his mouth all their host.
Perhaps nowhere else in Scripture is the power of God's word revealed more clearly than in the act of creation. Everything God imagined came into being through God's word. And God saw how good it was. We have this same power. Our words may not create mountains or rivers, but they do have the power to build up and tear down. Recall the times when you felt the power of a harsh word on your self-esteem or the elation that came from a kind word spoken during a difficult day. By sharing in God's creative imagination, we participate in the ongoing work of creation.
Where and how can I use my power of speech today to continue God's work of creation?
Whose words have helped to build me up?
(Speak to God using the words of this prayer, or a prayer of your own.)
Creator of all good things, thank you for the gift of speech and for the ability to share in your ongoing creation of all that exists. Help me to speak words of love and encouragement to those I meet this day.
