As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and allow yourself to grow still. Let go of any distracting thoughts. Take several slow, deep breaths. Become aware of the great love God has for you.
Mark 2:17
Jesus heard this and said to them [that], "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
The Gospels tell us that Jesus often sat at table with tax collectors and other sinners. It was during one such gathering that Jesus overheard some Pharisees asking his disciples about why he ate with tax collectors and sinners. They were not expecting his reply. Like a physician, Jesus tends to our needs. Our challenge is to recognize our sinfulness. By admitting this truth about ourselves, we are better able to recognize our need for forgiveness. By opening our hearts, we allow Jesus to call us to right living and to offer God's mercy and forgiveness.
How have you experienced God's love and mercy recently?
For what are you most in need of Jesus' healing presence at this time?
(Pray to God, using this prayer or words of your own.)
God of love and mercy, your Son, Jesus, came so that we might know the depth of your love for us. Help me to seek your mercy and forgiveness, confident of your love.
