As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and allow yourself to grow still. Let go of any distracting thoughts. Take several slow, deep breaths. Feel God's loving gaze upon you.
Genesis 3:4-5
But the serpent said to the woman: "You will certainly not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad."
Giving in to the serpent's temptation, Adam and Eve turned away from God. Their failure to obey God damaged their relationship with him. In addition they damaged their relationship with each other. Even as they faced the consequences of their actions, God's mercy was present and salvation was promised. We know that in our own lives turning away from God has painful consequences. However, if we choose to follow Jesus and obey God, we find happiness and salvation.
Am I ever selective about which of God's instructions I choose to obey?
How well do I accept responsibility for my sinfulness?
(Speak to God, using these words or others that come to mind.)
When I turn away from you, Lord, have mercy. When I turn away from others, Christ, have mercy. When I am afraid to face my sin, Lord, have mercy.
