As you prepare for this retreat, pause for a few moments and focus your attention on your breathing. Take several deep breaths. Be aware of God's loving presence within you.
Matthew 2:13-14
When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him." Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt.
Mary and Joseph had hardly bid farewell to the Magi when the threat of violence interrupted their lives. The angel's warning was enough. Joseph trusted his dreams; he did not trust Herod. The atmosphere surrounding Jesus' birth and infancy characterized the times in which Jesus grew up. It was a period marked by fear, mistrust, and violence. It is no wonder that when Jesus began his public ministry, his message of love for one's enemies, justice, and respect for others sounded so revolutionary. His message continues to be revolutionary today. As followers of Jesus, we are called to preach the same message by the way we live our lives.
Am I aware of the ways God speaks to me? What message have I heard and acted upon recently?
If someone was given the task of observing you today, how might he or she describe the way you preach Jesus' message of love, justice, and respect for others?
(Speak to God, using these words or words of your own.)
Loving God, your Son Jesus knew the experience of hatred and violence and responded with justice and love. Help me to follow his example and be a clear witness of your Kingdom of justice and love.
