Before you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and pay attention to your breathing. Slowly take three deep breaths and remember that you are in the loving presence of God.
Luke 12:32
Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.
What a reassuring message Jesus gives to his disciples and to us! He first acknowledges our human fears and then gently calls us beyond them. It's an invitation to deeper trust in the God who wills only our good. It is also a reminder of our true nature. We are created and sustained by a loving God, on whom we depend as sheep on a shepherd. With our generous God as shepherd, we have no more reason to fear.
When I reflect on my radical dependence on God, how do I feel inside?
Of what am I afraid? What prevents me from surrendering my fears to God?
(Speak to God using these or your own words.)
Loving God, thank you for creating and sustaining me. Help me to respond to your gift with ever greater trust.
