Before you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and set aside any distracting thoughts. Take several deep breaths and know that you are in the loving presence of God.
John 10:11
I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
The shepherd protects and guides his sheep. In the parable of the Good Shepherd, Jesus emphasizes that caring for only 99 out of 100 is not what God wants. God desires all people to be saved. In the Church, the pope, bishops, and priests are responsible for shepherding the flock of Jesus. The bishop's crozier with its curved design reflects this role of shepherd much as a shepherd's staff does. Each of us is called to carry on the mission of Jesus by shepherding those in our care.
How do I act in ways that reflect Jesus' care for people?
In what ways am I called to lay down my life for others?
(Speak to Jesus using this prayer or a prayer of your own.)
Patient Shepherd, no matter where I wander, you never give up on me. Thank you for your love and help me guide those in my care.
