As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and allow yourself to grow still. Let go of any distracting thoughts. Take several slow, deep breaths. Become aware of God's unconditional love for you.
Isaiah 40:28
Do you not know or have you not heard? The LORD is the eternal God, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint nor grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny.
In this passage, the prophet reminds the Israelites of God's faithfulness. God does not grow tired of his people, nor does God's love ever waver. These were welcome words for the Israelites, who were in exile in Babylon.
These words of consolation are addressed to us as well. Sometimes we may feel defeated or that we are a long way from home. Sometimes we may need a word of comfort or a reminder that God is with us. Isaiah reminds us of God's enduring love and calls us to place our hope in God.
In what area of my life am I most in need of God's consolation at this time?
What word of comfort can I offer today to someone who is suffering in body, mind, or spirit?
(Speak to God, using the words of this prayer or a prayer of your own.)
Eternal God, Creator of the ends of the earth, thank you for your faithfulness to me and to all your people. Help me be a source of consolation to others this day.
