As you prepare for this retreat, pause for a few moments and begin to relax. Become aware of God's unconditional love for you.
Matthew 5:23-24
Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
You have probably heard the expression "First things first" many times. That's what Jesus is telling his listeners. He wants them, and us, to get our priorities straight. Our inner life and our outer life ought to match. Worship and daily life are not separate from one another. The way we live our lives and relate to others are expressions of our relationship with God. When we separate worship from daily life, we become hypocrites, saying one thing and doing another. That is what Jesus is warning against. First, take care of broken relationships, then offer your gift to God. That is the only way we can live according to God's Kingdom.
What step can I take today to help bring my inner life into harmony with my outer life?
Is there someone with whom I need to be reconciled before I can leave my gift at the altar?
(Speak to Jesus, using these words or your own.)
Jesus, Prince of Peace, you call me to be reconciled with those with whom I am in conflict. Open my heart to show my love for you by how I treat others.
