Pause for a few moments to quiet yourself. Take several deep breaths and call to mind that you are in the loving presence of God. Place your trust in the Lord as you prepare to serve him once again.
James 3:5
In the same way the tongue is a small member and yet it has great pretensions. Consider how a small fire can set a huge forest ablaze.
The phrase "harmless gossip" is an oxymoron. Words have power. In this passage from the epistle of James, he warns of the destructive power of words. One title of Jesus is the Word of God. Our commitment to Christ commits us to truth in word and action. In order to live a moral life we are to refrain from gossip, slander, and detraction. Our tongues are committed to the truth, justice, and mercy of God, who gave them to us.
Am I tempted to criticize others rather than affirm them?
What help do I need from God to positively affirm others?
(Speak to God using this prayer or one of your own.)
God of truth, mercy, and justice, let my words and actions reflect my devotion to you.
