Before you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments to quiet yourself. Call to mind that you are in the presence of God.

John 20:21

[Jesus] said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."

The lack of peace in our world is a sure sign of the presence of sin. Sin, a separation from the loving presence of God, distances us from the ultimate source of peace. When we succumb to sin we are not at peace with God, others, or ourselves. When Jesus appeared to the disciples after the Resurrection, he gave them the gift of forgiveness and peace. In the Sacrament of Penance we experience the forgiveness of sins and the healing of our relationship with ourselves, others, and God.

Merciful and forgiving God, you know me and still you love me. Give me the courage to acknowledge my sin and seek your mercy and forgiveness.
