As you prepare for this retreat, pause for a moment. Take several deep breaths, and allow yourself to grow still. Be aware of God's loving presence within you.
Matthew 19:20-22
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to [the] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
We never learn the young man's name. What we do know is that he has observed the commandments and that he is attached to his possessions. Jesus must have known that, but it doesn't stop him from inviting him to something more. He invites the young man to be free of caring for his many possessions and to live for God instead. Jesus' call always leads to greater freedom. Just like the rich young man, we sometimes focus on what we will be asked to give up when we answer Jesus' call instead of what we will gain. Jesus challenges us to look beyond ourselves to the bigger picture.
Is there anything in my life that's preventing me from following Jesus more closely?
How has responding to Jesus' call in my life led me to greater freedom?
(Speak to Jesus, using these words or your own.)
Jesus, Son of God, I want to love you with all my heart. Keep inviting me to let go of the obstacles that keep me from following you wholeheartedly.
