As you prepare for this retreat, pause for a few moments and pay attention to your breathing. Slowly take three deep breaths and remember that you are in the loving presence of God.
Matthew 22:37-38
He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment."
Jesus' response to the Pharisee leaves no room for doubt. We are called to surrender our heart, soul, and mind to God. It is the greatest and the first commandment because it asks everything. Discipleship is not for the half-hearted. To follow Jesus is to grow continually in a deep love relationship with God. As in any relationship, as we grow closer to the one we love, we gradually take on the person's characteristics. Our intentional living of the first commandment offers us the chance to draw near to the mind and heart of God and to share the fruit of our relationship with the world.
How can I surrender my heart, soul, and mind more fully to God today?
Is there anything keeping me from loving God with all my heart, soul, and mind?
(Speak to Jesus, using these words or ones of your own.)
Jesus, help me to surrender myself more fully to the God of love.
