As you prepare for this retreat, pause for a few moments and pay attention to your breathing. Slowly take three deep breaths and remember that you are in the loving presence of God.
John 15:14
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
Friendship with Jesus has two requirements: love of God and love of neighbor. It doesn't seem like a lot to ask, does it? Yet, Scripture tells us that Jesus wasn't popular. Loving God and our neighbor requires that we turn the spotlight away from ourselves. That is possibly the hardest thing of all. Putting God and neighbor first involves humility. It also involves trust and a generous heart. These are all qualities of those who are friends of Jesus. We, too, are invited to be Jesus' friends. Accepting his invitation, we commit ourselves to daily growth in humility, trust, and generosity of heart.
What is the price of friendship with Jesus?
Can others tell that I am a friend of Jesus?
(Turn to Jesus and speak, using this prayer or one of your own.)
Thank you, Jesus, for inviting me into relationship with you. May I learn the way of true friendship by following you each day.
