Before you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and relax. Take several deep breaths, and be aware of the loving presence of God within you.
James 3:7-9
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no human being can tame the tongue. . . . With it we bless the LORD and Father, and with it we curse human beings who are made in the likeness of God.
We often hear it said that we should think before we speak. The tongue can be a dangerous weapon or a source of praise. We are challenged by the Eighth Commandment to honor the truth. The truth is that we are made in the likeness of God and are called to respect everything God made. When we allow our speech to be guided by the Holy Spirit, the words we speak are of mercy and compassion. Our speech can build others up rather than tear them down. We serve the Kingdom of God when we speak the truth in love.
How can I use my tongue today to help serve the Kingdom of God?
Is there someone in my life who is in special need of a word of mercy and compassion? What can I say to that person?
(Speak to Jesus using this prayer or one of your own.)
Jesus, Brother, open my eyes to see the likeness of God in each person I meet. Teach me to speak the truth in love.
