As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and allow yourself to grow still. Let go of any distracting thoughts. Take several slow, deep breaths. Become aware of the great love God has for you.
Galatians 5:22-23
In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
This Scripture passage is part of Paul's letter to the troubled church in Galatia. Other missionaries were leading these new converts astray, insisting that salvation was based on faith in Christ and adherence to Mosaic law. Paul reminds the new believers that it is not the Mosaic law that saves, but faith in Jesus and his promises. Paul's message is one of hope. It reminds us that we too are called to live in the freedom of the cross. The work of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian communities and our own leads to love, peace, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Which fruits of the Holy Spirit do I recognize when I heed the Spirit's promptings?
How can I be more attuned to the work of the Spirit in me?
(Using these words or your own, pray to God.)
Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may give joyful witness in all I say and do.
