Before you begin, pause for a moment. Take several deep breaths and allow yourself to grow still. Be aware of God's loving presence within you.
Acts of the Apostles 9:10-11
There was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias, and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered, "Here I am, Lord." The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight and ask at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is there praying."
The story of the conversion of Saint Paul is so powerful that we sometimes forget about the story of Ananias. We don't know much about Ananias except that he had a strong faith in God. How do we know this? In the story, God calls Ananias to go to the house where Saul is staying. Saul was known for murdering many Christians and had the authority to imprison any Christians he found in Damascus. Naturally, Ananias would have been reticent about meeting Saul. And yet that is what he did. Ananias, for all his reservations and fear, listened to God's call and went to find Saul. When he entered the house, he laid his hands on Saul and called him brother. Ananias's story is one of courage and trust in God.
What message does God have for me in the person of Ananias?
In my own faith journey, who has been instrumental in helping me draw closer to God?
(Speak to God, using this prayer or a prayer of your own.)
Here I am, Lord. I trust in you and long to do your will. Grant me the courage of Ananias to face my own fears and to follow wherever you ask me to go.
