Before you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments to pay attention to your breathing. Take some deep breaths and remember that you are in the loving presence of God, who is with you as you continue this journey of faith.
James 5:14-15
[T]hey should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick responds to the need for God's healing presence in the lives of those who are suffering and dying. With holy oil and prayer, the Church continues Jesus' ministry of healing. This sacrament is an expression of compassion for those who suffer and a source of grace and spiritual healing so that eternal life may be within reach.
Who are the sick and suffering that I can pray for today?
When I suffer in body, mind, or spirit, how can I seek to unite my suffering with that of Jesus?
(Pray to Jesus, using these words or those of your own.)
Jesus, merciful healer, you know human suffering in a way I can never know. Let me be a sign of your compassion and healing to those who suffer around me.
