Materials
Bibles
Large paper cups
Planting soil
Flower bulbs
Crayons and markers
Directions
Invite the children to listen to a reading of Psalm 1. Gather them in a circle and read aloud the passage.
Spend a few moments explaining to the children that those who follow God's law are like trees planted near water, constantly nourished.
When you feel the children are engaged in the passage's message, provide them each with a bulb, a paper cup, and some planting soil.
Explain to the children that they will plant a bulb and nourish it with water and sunlight to help it grow. Encourage the children to put their bulbs in a special place at home. Suggest that they ask their parents for help in finding the best place possible.
Before the children plant their bulbs in the paper cups, invite them to decorate the cups with purple crayons.
Remind the children that purple is the liturgical color for Lent.
After the children have decorated their cups and planted the bulbs, say: When we do good things, we blossom and grow closer to God. We awaken to new life, just like the flowers of spring.
