Requesting Permissions for Reprinting or Photocopying Loyola Press Material
Who can grant permission to reproduce copyrighted material?
Generally either the copyright holder or a party who has obtained an exclusive grant of rights from the copyright holder.
However, a copyright holder (typically, an author) who has granted exclusive rights to another (typically, a publisher) is no longer free to grant permission to third parties. That permission must come from the current holder of the exclusive rights. On the other hand, a publisher who has received only non-exclusive rights to publish material is not generally entitled to grant permission to others to reprint that material.
Clearly locating the correct permissions grantor is the first step in obtaining reprint permissions, and while many conditions affect who actually holds the right to grant reprint permission, here are some general tips on where to begin:
- If the material is in print, start with the original publisher.
- If the material is out of print, start with the copyright holder as stated in the copyright notice.
- If the material is itself reprinted (as, say, an article from an anthology or quoted material in a body of text),start with the original source as credited in the copyright page, the acknowledgements, or footnotes and endnotes.
Note also, if the material is a translation, permission must be obtained for both the translation and the original text.
Should you determine that Loyola Press is the most likely permission grantor for the material you wish to use, please contact customerservice@loyolapress.com, providing the following information:

Guidelines for Reprinting and Photocopying Material from the Loyola Press WebSite
If you wish to print the articles in full directly off of the Loyola Press Web site, you may do that without asking for permission provided that:
- The only copyright claimant on the page you print is Loyola Press. (Occasionally we use content that is owned by others. We receive permission from the rights holder to reproduce that content, but we do not receive permission to allow others to reproduce it. Therefore, if there is an excerpt of, say, a story or poem that is copyrighted by someone other than Loyola Press, we cannot grant permission to you to print out that material and distribute it.)
- The URL is clearly visible on whatever Loyola Press Web material you distribute so that recipients can navigate back to the source of the material.
- You are distributing the materials for educational purposes in a non-for-profit venue.
However, if you want to reprint the content of our articles in, say, a church newsletter or some other publication of your own, then you need to request and receive permission from us. Please contact customerservice@loyolapress.com, providing the following information:
- Your contact information—name, institution, mailing address, and e-mail or phone number
- The title of the source article and its URL
- Identification of the exact text you would like to reprint
- A description of the type of publication in which it will appear (say, a church bulletin, school newsletter, etc.)
- The date you will be distributing the publication
- The number of copies you will be distributing
- The media means of distribution (print, electronic, or both)
Your requests will be answered as quickly as possible. Please allow 5-10 business days for an initial response.
